Charlie and the Christmas to remember

After a nice night at the farm we arrived home to an awful situation.  Charlie had gotten into 2 packs of sugar free gum under the tree.  Sugar free gum is toxic.  After cleaning up the couch, giving her a bath, getting the kids to bed, things took a turn for the worse.  Dan ended up at 12:00 bringing Charlie to the emergency vet in Kalamazoo.  Poor Dan....that ride was AWFUL.

December 25th:

Charlie's is at the emergency vet.(Dan brought her around 1 am)..she is now stable but NOT out of the woods. It's was an awful night. Long story...but SUGAR FREE GUM can KILL A DOG. Seizures..low blood sugar..and liver damage/failure...throwing up...peeing....howling..horror!!

Right now they know she isn't in liver failure but there IS damage. They are monitoring her liver enzymes and glucose levels. Shes on medication and supplements. They will do more tests at 8 pm tonight which will give us a better idea where we head from here. Just got done with a visit. She was very happy to see us. She looked better then we ever expected. Please pray for her...she needs it. So, do we. Our hearts are very heavy. The staff has been wonderful to us and Charlie. Please keep them in your thoughts as they are spending Christmas away from loved ones to care for our fur babies.

December 27: 

Here's the update. Unfortunately, her enzyme levels are still to high. However, we have decided to monitor and give her the meds from the comforts of home. Things can still work out but they can also go really bad FAST. We will have more blood work done Thursday or Friday with our vet. The next week will let us know if she will make it. We are NOT out of the woods, YET! The toxins can still be deadly. We are watching for signs of blood...spots on her tummy, gums, in her stool or if she throws up. Also, loss of appetite. BUT...IF we can get past the next week we should be free and clear! We love her so much. We also appreciate all of you. Your prayers and good vibes along with texts and messages have helped us make it thru the past few days.

December 28

Miracle! This terrible awful few days is OVER. Thank you everyone!!! Her tests came back. Liver enzymes are going DOWN!!! At there highest they were over 1400...today 600!!! 2 more weeks of meds and hopefully they work down even more. But for now we CELEBRATE!!
